Dear Dobson, I am sure that my position is stronger when I am fighting for my own hand in my own way than when I have party politicians on the platform. Therefor I would ask no MPs or others - only local men who will take the line I advise which is I leave politics alone as far as possible + stick to trade. Arras is an excellent chairman... I have asked Griffith + Thorburn what they think of my newspaper idea. With all Xmas wishes, Yours very truly A Conan Doyle." The man most well known for authoring Sherlock Holmes was also involved in politics at the turn of the 20th century, running for Parliament twice as part of the Liberal Unionist party.
