Item Details
Description
We are exceptionally pleased to present this scarce Weller Standard Glazed pottery vase, finished with incredible integral mold & applied hand enameled sprigging. This gorgeous & Rare whimsical 5.5 x 5.5 x 5.75" tall footed vase, is in the form of a square shoulder teapot, and features spectacular double garland sprigs. Our form was produced between 1898 and ca. 1900, and was a marvelous adjunct to the hand painted Louwelsa, and Lonhuda Line items. The base vessel is finished in a spectacular rich dark brown ground, weighs 1#, and is in excellent condition. An EXACT form match can be found on Page #117 of Sanford’s Guide to Peters and Reed, The Zane Pottery Company / by Martha & Steve Sanford. Their example is without the gorgeous sprigging, and listed $175, way back in 2000. As the base clays of the Standard Ware line are red, for nearly a century, this entire line was attributed to Peters & Reed. Please see the history below detailing the solving of the mystery. The age old identification of the 1898 - ca. 1903 Peters & Reed Standard Ware pottery, finished in hand painted relief molds over a deep brown glaze, was debunked ca. 2000 in the Sanford’s Guide, with the inclusion of specific mold identifications by renowned authority Mr. Robert Bettinger. This exceptional line of diverse forms, all featured integral mold or applied Sprigging (relief) garlands, floral sprays, cameos, leaves, Cherubs, and human busts, which were enameled in soft pinks, yellows, blues, and greens. As no other reference had ever showcased the Standard Ware as a full and separate line, the use of the deep red clay led to the obvious conclusion for a century that Peters & Reed necessarily was the potter. Consequently, all references from the 20th century defaulted these patterns to Peters & Reed. However in 2000, coinciding with the finishing of the Sanford’s book, world renowned collector, & dealer Robert Bettinger, established an unimpeachable link to the actual potter, WELLER! xxxxxxxxxxxxxx . As history records that this line was offered in an overall matte glaze finish, a combination obverse matte & reverse hi gloss finish, and an overall high gloss glaze, the artwork was quite different from the basic Weller Louwelsa & Lonhuda. The base glaze was a darker brown, and the Sprigging, whether integral to the mold or applied, was unique to that period. Being unsigned, we hazard a guess that this line was offered at a somewhat lesser cost than that of the Louwelsa, but that is pure supposition on our part. Sanford’s Guide to Peters and Reed gives an extensive review of this gorgeous line, from pages #113-119, including a myriad of close-ups of the relief patterns, as well as a grand gallery of finished forms. The Jewel of this section is the cross referencing to Weller, accomplished by Robert Bettinger representing (19) separate well known Weller forms, in a total of at least (33) different finishes. These Weller forms can be found in Matte & Standard Louwelsa glazes, plus 1st & 2nd Line Dickens Ware, Hunter, Auroro, Eocean, Lonhuda, Sicardo, and Shape #318 pieces. Bettinger denotes the author and book for comparison on Page #117 of Sanford’s Guide to Peters and Reed. The majority of matches to Weller were accomplished through the following references: Weller Pottery / by Jeffrey B. Snyder; The Collectors Encyclopedia of Weller Pottery / by Sharon & Bob Huxford; All About Weller Book II: A History of Weller Pottery, the Founder, the Family, the Lines, and the Artists / by Ann Gilbert McDonald, Doris Anderson Lechler.
