K-043 U.S. M1858 "Army Hat" - also known as the "Jeff Davis hat" - worn by a member of Company I, 4th US Cavalry. 6" high black felt body with a turned up brim, on the left side, held in place with a gilt brass US eagle badge. Brass crossed swords insignia and "4" and "I". Yellow-gold cap cords and the original black ostrich feather. Inside top has the original dull gold marked eagle/shield/military motifs, "U.S. Army", "EXTRA MANUFACTURE", "7 1/4" and "No.5" In spite of a 1 1/2" age split where the brim meets the back of the body, hat would rate in excellent condition.
