Description
K-044 Civil War blue felt fez worn by a member of the 11th New York Fire Zouaves. Retaining its original semi-stiff blue felt body, a close examination shows a series of surface moth tracking, which fortunately did not penetrate the body of the cap. Original full blue yarn, knot and tassel with multiple strands. The brass Company letter "B" shows an aged patina. There is one moth nip on the narrow striped cloth border at the base of the cap--on the back side. Basically, considering the age, the condition would rate very good. This particular fez was acquired some years ago by a collector from the Orwell, New York G.A.R. collection. The 11th Zouaves were commanded by the charismatic Colonel Elmer Elsworth. The start of the Civil War saw Elsworth quickly equipping his troops and departing for Washington on 29 April 1861. On 24 May he attempted to remove a Confederate flag from a hotel roof in Alexandria, Virginia and was killed in the process, becoming the North's first martyr. The 11th Zouaves went on to take part in the battles of Bull Run and Manassas. In May of 1862, the 11th New York Zouaves returned to New York. Rare. I
