Description
Noel Rockmore (New York/New Orleans, 1928-1995) oil on board painting of a busy street scene under a darkened, bird-filled sky; a large terminal-like building is in the background and in the foreground is a small fenced off area where a woman is feeding birds. Signed lower right and dated July 5, '69. Narrow gilt frame. 24" x 40" sight, 25" x 41" framed. Biography (courtesy Askart: The Artists' Bluebook): The son of New York artists Floyd and Gladys Rockmore Davis, Noel Rockmore was a child prodigy. He studied at the Art Students League and was given a show at the Metropolitan Museum of Art at the age of 24; exhibitions at the Whitney Museum, Pennsylvania Academy and Cleveland Institute of Art followed. Rockmore made his first visit to New Orleans in 1960 and soon relocated there; he is best known for his Preservation Hall musician portraits and scenes of New Orleans and Coney Island. Provenance: the collection of Stephen and Lisa Steiner Small, Nashville, Tennessee.
