Item Details
Description
Merrill, W.E.; "Battlefield in front of Franklin, Tenn. Where the United States forces, consisting of the 4th & 23rd Corps and the Calvary Corps M.D.M, all under the command of Maj. Genl J.M. Schofield severely repulsed the Confederate army commanded by Lt. Genl. Hood, November 30th 1864". Published by the authority of the Honorable Secretary of War in the Office of the Chief Engineers, U.S. Army, 1874. Image 27.5" H x 17.5" W on a sheet 41" H x 28 3/4" W. In lower right margin is printed "Am. Photo-Lithographic Co, N. Y., (Osborne's Process)". This is the second edition with name of lithographer; Ref. Stephenson, "Civil War Maps" #425. Note: In the 1860s and 1870s, the War Department issued lithographed maps made from hand drawn maps its engineers had drawn during the war. These relatively rare maps were loose sheets of various sizes, not part of atlases or books, although some of them were similar to the maps issued in official reports. Many of them served as the basis for the maps in the official Civil War Atlas published in the 1890s.
