Book with small manuscript battlefield map of Manassas. Gilham, William. MANUAL OF INSTRUCTION FOR THE VOLUNTEERS AND MILITIA OF THE UNITED STATES. Philadelphia: Desilver, 1861. 8vo. 743, [1] pp., 7 folding tables. Illustrated in-text throughout. Binding with water-damage and spine strip detached, contents with some water-stains, soiling and foxing, Poor to Fair. ******************************** Apparently carried onto the battlefield by John Thomas Gibson, of the Virginia Militia. Front pastedown inscribed by Gibson, Jefferson Co., VA. A small and crude battlefield map of Manassas (Bull Run) appears on the front endpaper, dated July 21st, 1861. The blank 3/4 of page 672 contain manuscript calculations for artillery -- in this case a 12 pound Howitzer -- and a few other similar notes to rear pastedown.
