Description
A Greek red-figure ram-headed rhyton Apulia, Taranto, circa 340-310 B.C. The ram's head black glazed, with reserved areas for the curved horns and the eyes, with long protruding ears,the gently flaring neck enlivened with white slip, decorated with a draped female figure, seated on a group of rocks, holding a bunch of grapes and a casket, a band of ovolo below and a band of triangles on the rim, with palmettes at either side of the strap handle, L: 6¾ in (17cm). This lot does is not referee with a TL test. Ex collection of Field Marshal Horatio Herbert Kitchener, 1st Viscount Kitchener of Khartoum and Broome (1850-1916). Thence by descent. Kitchener was awarded the title of Lord Kitchener of Khartoum in 1898 after winning the Battle of Omdurman and obtaining control of the Sudan. After a incredibly successful career in the army, Lord Kitchener was appointed Secretary of State for War in 1914 at the beginning of World War I.
