This book was published under the title ‘Abbildung der deutschen Holzarten für Forstmänner und Liebhaber der Botanik‘ by Carl Ludwig Willdenow. The latter worked as a pharmacist in Berlin and became the director of the Botanical Garden in Berlin in 1810. The present work, published after Willdenow’s death, is one of his most splendid publications. This copy contains 216 hand coloured copperplate engravings by Friedrich Guimpel. All engravings are signed in the plate ‘F. Guimpel fec.’. The book is bound in a plain brown contemporary half leather cover.
The work is in fair condition according to its age. It only contains the 216 plates of both volumes, which are in good condition, but not the texts. The paper is a little browned along the margins due to age and shows minor foxing. The colours are well preserved. The binding shows colour and material abrasions, the cook covers are loose. The gold embossing on the spine is no longer visible. The book measures 26 x 21 cm.
