Very rare porcelain made formation by KPM
Height: 29 cm

This figure group of bisque porcelain originates from KPM from Berlin from the period of 1837 until 1844. It was created after a model by Christian Daniel Rauch for a memorial of August Hermann Francke in Halle from the year 1825. On a stepped square plinth standing, is the theologian, teacher and university professor August H. Francke (1663-1727) depicted. The design model shows the benefactor of the poor and orphaned children, who was active in the area around Halle, dressed in the gown of a cleric, flanked by two boys dressed in simple shirts, who are looking up to him in confidence. Francke turns towards them, with the right hand referring to godly help as Christ-like mediator between God and men. In 1695/98, Francke founded in front of the gates of the city Halle a charity school and an orphanage. The memorial is a typical work for the sculptor Rauch. Rauch received the commission for the monument in 1825 and it was released in 1828 nearby Halle’s city centre. The marble plinth of the monument, which was erected in 1829, was designed by Karl Friedrich Schinkel. The porcelain group is a very rare porcelain made formation by KPM. The National Gallery of Berlin possesses a cast design model of the monument.

The porcelain group by KPM is marked with the blue sceptre mark, ‘KPM‘, and ‘S‘, underneath the base. The model date ‘7 Juli 1825’, is on the verso of the form. The porcelain group is in good condition with traces of wear and age like minimal surface blemishes. The forefinger has broken off. The front left corner of the plinth shows a small chip. The height of the figure is 29 cm and the dimensions of the plinth are 18 x 8.7 cm.

Königliche Porzellan-Manufaktur Berlin

Founded in 1763 by Frederick the Great, the manufactory was based on three private companies that had tried to produce porcelain in Berlin for some time. Since 1871, had the manufactory been located near the Tiergarten in Berlin. The company took up the production of painted porcelain tiles under the direction of Professor Alexander Kips and made a huge profit. After the destruction of the manufactory during the Second World War, it was the province of Berlin that took over the company in 1988. Since 2006, KPM is owned by the private banker Jörg Woltmann.
