Description
DESCRIPTION: This is a rare colonial burl walnut wooden treen batter pitcher from New England, circa early 1700s. One of the earliest forms of bread in the colonies was a pancake. Batter was a simple form of flour, corn meal, milk, eggs and lard. There were many different versions of this simple fried batter in the form of pancakes, flapjacks and griddlecakes. It was very common for the colonial pioneers to keep Johnny Cakes in their pockets. A batter pitcher would have been a common necessity for the colonial scullery. Most of the batter pitchers or jugs were made of stoneware and redware. It is very rare and uncommon to have a "hand hewn" early colonial burled walnut batter pitcher with a rounded gourd shape. The burl walnut batter pitcher is thick and strong. The inside of the burl batter pitcher was "hollowed out" of one solid piece of walnut wood. There is a long narrow spout for pouring the thick batter slowly onto a hot open hearth griddle. The handle on the burl walnut batter pitcher is wide and thick and there is a thumb rest for ease of handling. MEASUREMENTS: 11 inches long including handle & spout, 5 inches high, and 7 inches wide.SHIPPING: Packaging, handling, and shipping for all locations in the 48 Continental United States is $25. For Alaska, Hawaii, International, and all other locations outside the 48 Continental United States packaging and handling is $10 plus shipping which can be determined by using USPS.com with origin of 19968, package dimensions of 14X11X7 and 4 pounds and your destination location.
