This is a historically valuable painting, documenting a lost original by Lucas Cranach

The present painting is a copy of a portrait of the Archbishop of Mainz by Lucas Cranach the Elder (1472-1553), originally in the Gemäldegalerie Berlin and lost during the Second World War. The present copy is therefore of great documentary value. As a promoter of the indulgences and the highest-ranking religious dignitary of the ‘Old Reich’, Cardinal Albrecht of Brandenburg, later archbishop of Mainz (1490-1545), was one of the main opponents of Martin Luther.

The left side of the painting bears the monogram of Lucas Cranach. A label on reverse describes the work as copy by “Prof. Scheurig”. The paint surface shows some paint losses and framing marks. There is a vertical hairline crack in upper edge of the wooden panel (approximately 5 cm). The ornate frame shows some losses of material. The overall dimensions, including the frame, are 94 x 69 cm. The panel measures 85 x 58 cm.
