The present painting is the work of the Hungarian painter and writer Román György. It is titled ‘Rigoletto’, and dates from 1963. The abstracted, figurative composition is characterized by a relief-like paint surface. The earthy colors have been dynamically applied and without contour-lines, so that the composition can only be identified upon closer look. In the center, there is a clown along with other figures in front of an audience. The depiction most likely illustrates a scene from Giuseppe Verdi’s Opera ‘Rigoletto’.
The painting is signed and dated lower right, ‘Román György 1963’. It is signed, titled and dated in felt-pen by the artist on verso, ‘Roman György / Rigoletto / Bp. [Budapest] 1963 / O. fa .’ The painting has been mounted on board. It probably once consisted of the parts. Upon closer inspection, a horizontal line is visible in the center. Inspection under UV light reveals minor areas of retouching to the aforementioned line. Otherwise the painting is in good condition with light framing marks. The wooden frame shows some wear, and the bars are a bit loose. The overall dimensions, framed, are 80.5 x 127.5 cm. The board measures 122.5 x 74 cm.
Román György (1904-1981)
Born in Budapest, the painter György Román studied painting at the National Royal Academy of Arts, and drawing in Munich. This was followed by journeys through Europe and Asia. György was also active as a writer. His success as a painter started in the 1940s. In the 1960s, he settled in the United States.
