This oil painting, executed in light impasto paint application, comes from the hand of the Austrian painter Werner Augustiner and was created around 1960. Augustiner was always committed to the painting style of French Expressionism. The scale of painting as well as the use of bold colors characterize the painting present here, which therefore stands in the tradition of the painters of the Fauves such as the artists Matisse, Derain and Vlaminck.
The painting bears on the verso the estate stamp (twice) ‘Werner Augustiner / Aus dem Verlaß des akad. Malers Werner Augustiner / *25.5.1922 - 10.1.1986’. It is in very good condition, on the reverse with faint water stains. The dimensions of the hardboard are 47.5 x 60 cm.
Werner Augustiner (1922-1986)
The painter Werner Augustiner was born in Graz in 1922. He attended the School of Applied Arts in Graz from 1936 to 1940, followed by studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna where he was educated by Karl Sterrer and Albert Paris Gütersloh. Various study trips led him to Italy, Turkey and Greece. Augustiner’s painting was influenced by French Expressionism, his motifs were mostly landscapes, nudes and genre scenes as well as scenes from Christian iconography.
