Overall dimensions: c. 10.5 x 15 cm (height x width)
Good condition
This lot comprises five retro-style photographs from the time around 2007, showing different, quite bizarre motifs. These photomontages were taken by the artist Thomas Herbrich (born 1955), who is well-known for his so called ‘retrographies’ with surprise effect.
The first photograph shows the motif of a giraffe that is taken on a lead by a man across a bridge with the bright full moon in the background. In the second photograph we can see the same colossal moon, glowing over some dark houses. The third photograph depicts the flooded backdrop of the New York banking quarter; at the right margin we can see a typical London telephone box with a gentleman balancing on its roof. There is an architectonic structure in the background of the forth photograph that reminds of the Eiffel Tower. In the foreground we can see a creature in a monk’s robe, standing next to a camp fire. The last fifth photograph shows a spruce cone converted into a funny flying object that is regulated by two bold mice pilots.
All photographs are in a good overall condition with only small partial traces of use. Some margins are minimally kinked. The second photograph described above shows a fine scratch on the left margin. The giraffe-motif is the largest photograph of the lot, measuring 10.5 cm in height and 15 cm in width. All photographs are mounted on cardboard and framed with in passe-partout. The wooden frames are in a very good condition and measure 22 cm in height and 28 cm in width. (cbo)
Thomas Herbrich (born 1955)
The Dusseldorf photographer Thomas Herbrich started his training at a studio that was specialised in still life photography. Since 1983, Herbrich is a freelance photographer with his own studio in Dusseldorf. Apart from advertising photography, Herbrich also develops special effects for cinematographic productions, such as the first film by Roland Emmerichs. Inspired by the artistic work by Stanley Kubrick, Herbrich composes his motifs with individual settings that are built in his studio. After this, real figures are either directly integrated into the scenery, or later with further digital processing. Herbrich is seldom interested in the depiction of reality, but much more in the play with fiction. This is why he usually exceeds the boundaries of classic photography.
