Northwest Passage :
A unique 19thC dark oak wood and brass coffin shaped puzzle snuff box made from the refit left over wood from Sir John Frankin's flag ship HMS Erebus , the brass engraved ' H. M. S Erebus' and ' Beechey Island 1846 ' -
4" long and has some old snuff within.
The fatal expedition undertaken by H. M. S Erebus and H. M. S. Terror from which there were no survivors, set off in May 1845 and never returned. The mission (undertaken for the fourth time ), as instructed by the British Admiralty, was to look for the time and money saving sea trade route through the Arctic Ocean where the Atlantic Ocean joined the Pacific Ocean, instead of passing Africa and India in order to reach the West coast of America.
