Northwest Passage :
Silver cased pocket Thermometer by Dent, London. Hallmarked for 1847, when Edward Dent was working at 81 Strand, London. This thermometer is understood to have been made for the search of Captain Sir John Franklin made by the Admiralty after being pressed by Franklin's Wife. Most probably made for the ship's Doctor, it being of slightly larger than normal diameter, and reacts quickly when placed against the skin. Signed across the dial 'Dent London' and marked, radially, 'Mercury Freezes', 'Blood heat', 'Fahrenheit Scale', 'Temperate', and 'Freezing', completed with a circumferential degrees scale. 2 1/4" diameter
