Description The coins are packaged in soft plastic, each with six pockets: five for coins, one for a United States Special Mint Set double sided coin which is blue with silver lettering and the eagle seal. Included with these packages are letters from the Director of the Mint, directed toward the recipient, informing them of the process of proofing a mint set as well as providing guidelines on storage.

History Because of a coin shortage during the mid-1960s, the U.S. Mint did not issue Proof Sets from 1965-1967. Instead, “Special Mint Sets” featuring extra high-quality uncirculated coins were produced.
