Description: This photograph displays a posing Sergeant Major Charles C. Fisher, taken in Portland, Oregon in 1889. The Sergeant Major is in full military attire, with his sword held in his gloved hands perpendicular to his thighs. The military jacket has five shining buttons and a belt clasped high around the waist with a metal buckle. The dark fabric of the jacket is striped with white lines, forming round-topped diamond shapes along his upper arms and two parallel diagonal stripes along his forearms. The pants are of a lighter hue than the jacket with a single vertical stripe down the outside of his leg. His cap, with a visor shading his eyes, shows two crossed rifles at the center.
Condition: The photograph is well preserved, with only age-related discoloration making the photograph seem yellowed.
History: The Indian Wars were a part of American life and history from its colonial years up until the 1890s, though some would claim they continued until as late as 1924 in the form of intermittent conflicts. The last officially recognized participant in the Indian Campaigns was awarded a medal in 1898, with no further recognitions given since.
