Item Details
Description
5th-6th century AD. A right-angled mount decorated on the outer face with triangular gold cells and cloison garnets; two rivets to the end for attachment to the frame of the sheath, accretion from the iron blade remaining. Cf. the right-angled cloisonné mounts from the scabbard of the knife associated with Childeric in Arrhenius, B. Merovingian Garnet Jewellery, Stockholm, 1985, fig.116. 21 grams, 88mm (3 1/2"). Ex Hiller collection, acquired in the 1950s. A similar mount, with rather more complex cloisonne design, formed part of the burial furniture of King Childeric I at Tournai; Childeric was the founder of the Frankish Merovingian dynasty who died circa 481 AD.
