Description:
Seven Jazz magazines (one French) with front-cover portraits of Black musicians: Lionel Hampton on Down Beat, Sept. 1, 1943; Lester Young on The Jazz Record, Dec. 1943; Meade “Lux” Lewis on the Jazz Record, March 1945; Cootie Williams and Ella Fitzgerald on Down Beat, July 14, 1945; Count Basie on Hot Jazz, Revue du Club de France, May-June 1946; Dizzy Gillespie on Metronome, The Review of Modern Music, Jan. 1948; and Sidney Bechet on Playback, the International Jazz Magazine, Sept. 1949. Complete issues in original pictorial wrappers. With: Etude, Music Magazine, March 1941.
According to a 1954 bibliography, some 25 Jazz magazines were published in America between 1934 (the first issue of Down Beat) and 1950. Surprisingly few of the issues seem to feature front cover illustrations of Black musicians. A copy of Etude, the mainstream music magazine, is also offered here because of its reprint of a British essay which argued that “the American Jew is to be credited equally with the Negro for jazz.”
