Description
H 7 3/8 in. This was an extremely rare and exquisite underglaze blue Binhu of the Yuan Dynasty (1279-1368). The spout was decorated as a phoenix head and the handle was designed as the tail. The interesting design was that water came out of the spout in two streams. The body was decorated with a phoenix flying admist flowers. There was a similar Binhu in the Capitol Museum of Beijing. However, it was a restructured Yuan Dynasty binhu designed as a phoenix. The 'off white' background was the landmark of the Yuan Dynasty porcelains. Provenance: Collection of a Chinese scholar in Ohio.
