Description
19th century Lithograph of James Pollards " Royal Mails outside the Angel Inn in Islington" on the birthday of George IV (in the early 1800s). The King's birthday occasioned an annual procession by the Royal Mail and here we see the coaches at night preparing to depart around the country. In the early nineteenth century much investment was put into improving roads and engineering faster coaches but journeys remained prohibitively long for many. The image is lettered with a title and dedication to the King, as well as the artist's name 'London published by Thomas McLean 26 Haymarket'. And in LR "Engraved by R.G. Reeve. Overall framed size is 32 by 39 inches. Foxing throughout glass, mat and print. Some scratches and tears.
