Description
[Slavery]. 2 Documents: Reconstruction broadside and Affidavit. Both are from a "scam" from 1893 meant to get money from former slave owners, who could attest to the number of slaves owned before the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863, in pursuit of possible future compensation for monetary or property losses. The broadside was sent to select Southerners in 1893 requesting the names of their slaves, evidence of ownership, and a sliding fee for the services of the registry, depending on the number of slaves owned. Broadside: 11 5/8”. Affidavit: 3 ¾” x 8”. Both of the above single-sided documents in very good condition with minor edge tears and crease to lower left edge in broadside letter. Tipped with small bit of adhesive to upper corner of versos.
