First Publish’d by the Learned Dr. Cowel… and continu’d by Tho. Manley… Lon: J. Place/ A. & J. Churchil/ R. Sare, 1701. Unpaginated. [title], [verso], Prefaces [3]-[12], text [13]-[339], Index [340]-[352] pp. In the main portion of the text, the first alphabet is in 4’s. The 2nd and 3rd alphabets of signatures are in 2’s. The 2nd alphabet’s first 3 signatures are mis-signed with 3 letters (instead of being signed with 2 letters). In the 3rd alphabet of signatures, the signings go straight from having 3 letters in signature “Ooo” to having 4 letters in signature “Pppp,” and the Index begins on the verso of [Pppp 2]. Collation: [title leaf], [1-leaf “Preface to the Last Edition…”], main Preface a[1]-[a2], b[1]-[b2], text B[1]-[Z 4], Aaa[1]-Ccc[2], Dd[1]-Zz[2], Aaa[1]-Ooo [2], Pppp [1]-[Pppp 2], Index Qqqq[1]-[Ssss 2]. Recased and recornered with earlier leather covers retained. Light dampstain mostly to outer margin, mostly toward lower corner. Some dog-earing (usually gentle). Wear to outer edge of Ss 2 to 4Z4 and a few other leaves (not usually significant). The 2nd leaf [Bbb 2] has a few small holes to outer margin. Tiny hole in outer portion of last leaf. Binding and pages very good plus. The Preface includes a royal proclamation of Mar. 25, 1610: “…Men in these our days do not spare to wade in all the deepest Mysteries that belong to the Persons or State of Kings and Princes, that are Gods upon Earth…” [verso of leaf b1, 12th-10th line from bottom]. The proclamation also accuses Cowell of “…speaking unreverently of the Common Law of England, and the Works of some of the most famous and antient judges therein: a thing utterly unlawful to any Subject… prohibit the buying, uttering, or reading of the said Book, but do also will and straitly command… do deliver the same presently upon this publication to the Lord Mayor of London… or otherwise to the Sheriff of the County...” [recto of leaf b2].
