Description
WILLIAM HULL'S FAREWELL TO HIS TROOPS
WILLIAM HULL (1753 - 1825) American general and politician, fought in the Revolution, was Governor of Michigan Territory, and a general in the War of 1812, for which he is best remembered for surrendering Fort Detroit to the British on August 16, 1812. Official contemporary copy of Hull's farewell to his troops, the 3rd Militia, as signed by his adjutant John L. Tuttle, 2pp. legal folio, Newton, Ma., Apr. 11, 1805. Hull, appointed Michigan governor by Jefferson almost three weeks earlier, commends his men: "...they will be held in grateful remembrance by him...From a permeation of the great importance of a well regulated militia to the safety of their Country...he has devoted a large portion of his life...aided by the...exertions of his Brother officers...each officer and soldier may long continue in the paths of military glory...an example to their Country...". Very good.
