Description
1830S MEXICAN "INDEPENDENCE" SWORD
Rare officer's sword from the years just following Mexico's independence from Spain in 1821, 34 1/2" overall with a 29 1/2" black blade adorned with gold filigree on both sides. The grip appears to be mother of pearl, each side affixed with two studs. The handguard, pommel, and crossguard are all gilt, largely intact. Most interesting is the Mexican eagle and snake emblem on the crossguard, which has a "liberty cap" placed above the eagle's head (inspired by the French Revolution) which is emanating rays of "freedom". Seldom encountered.
