JOSEPH G. ROSENGARTEN
(1835 - 1921) Union officer, at Fredericksburg he distinguished himself by picking up the colors after four other sergeants had fallen. Served on Reynold's staff at Chancellorsville and Gettysburg, and delivered Reynolds' body to Lancaster for burial. A.L.S. 1p. 8vo., Philadelphia, Jan. 18, 1876 to Gen. Thomas Rodenbaugh. He compliments the general on his book: "…you deserve a great deal of praise for your capital execution of the very laborious task…". Expertly inlaid, fine.
