GEN. DAVID M. GREGG'S STAFF HAVE THEIR PHOTOGRAPHS TAKEN
War-date Union officer's letter, 1p. 4to., written by Lt. Thomas J. Gregg, Co. F, 6th Penn. Cavalry (Rush's Lancers) as aide de camp on the staff of his brother Brig. Gen. David Mc. Gregg, "Head Quart 2nd C. C., March 29, 1864, to his sister. In part: "…whilst on the Stoneman raid at Thompson's Cross roads I succeeded in getting a very small english saddle which belonged to the son of a rich planter near there. I have been riding on this ever since…on almost every march we pick up some little thing but our transportation is so very poor that these little mementoes are lost. About a month ago we had photographs taken of the entire staff on one card, four or five different views. Some of these are very good and to Dave and myself will be a great interest…I intend having all my horses and negro (Phil) taken on one card. I would love to have a good picture of them…Dave is at Corps Headquarters…there is some talk of our regiment being ordered back to the Div…Harry [brother Capt. Henry B. Gregg, 13th Penn. Cav. captured Sulphur Springs, Va., Oct 12, 1863] has had a long vacation. Does he expect to be next Lt. Col. of his regiment…they want some good man as Col. for it is by far the worst regiment we have…". Very good.
