Curie Marie
Marie Curie Rare Signed Portrait
Rare formal portrait photograph of scientist Marie Curie (1867-1934) seated in a chair. Signed by her on the mount as "M. Curie" and dated "November 8, 1929." Also pencil signed by photographer Blanche de Lorier (anglicized spelling.) The sepia colored photograph shows a few wrinkles in the upper left corner, and Curie's face appears to be slightly retouched, else near fine. Measures 7.5" x 9.75". Matted and framed behind UV filtering Plexiglass within an antiqued silver gilt frame. Not examined out of frame. Overall size measures 15" x 19".
Marie Sklodowska Curie, a Polish-born French naturalized citizen, won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1903 and the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1911. Along with her husband and collaborator Pierre Curie (1859-1906), Marie extensively studied the effects of radioactivity, or the emanation of radiation from naturally occurring elements, and even coined the term "radioactivity." Her achievements included the co-discovery of the new elements polonium and radium.
