NEW YORK SOLDIER SKETCHES HIS CAMP
Illustrated Union soldier's letter on illustrated letterhead, 4pp. 8vo., "near Barksown, Va.", July 10, 1863. Marvin Lindsley[?] writes his mother in Livingston, N.Y in rather sloppy pencil, in part: "…we left White House Landing…having marched a distance of 54 miles [in two days]. It has been the hardest march we have ever seen…we start for Washington on a steam boat…[July 14] we are going to join the Army of the Potomac..we are going from here to join Genl. Meades army… we are going to leave our knapsacks here…". Within, two pages bear an ink layout of the soldier's regimental camp, showing officer's quarters, guard house, musicians' tents, sutler, headquarters, parade ground, etc. Interesting.
