ORGANIZATION OF AN IRISH REGIMENT
A good war-date New York regimental document, 3pp. 4to., on finely illustrated Adjutant General's Office letterhead, Albany, Nov. 12, 1862 concerning the creation of the 155th New York Vols. In part: "...The consolidation of the several regiments of the 'Irish Legion' made by Colonel George Bliss…as stated in his communication…to Brig. Gen. Michael Corcoran is hereby approved…the following persons are appointed Field, staff and company officers of the 155th Regiment New York, and will be commissioned…". What follows is a complete list of the 155th's officers, including William McEvily as colonel and James McMahon as lieutenant colonel. The 155th served in the backwaters of Virginia from the time of her creation until Grant's Overland campaign at which time she became part of Hancock's 2nd Corps and participated in all that Corps operations including those at Petersburg and Lee's surrender at Appomattox. Very good.
