KANSAS MINISTER HATES SLAVERY HYPOCRITES
Minister's letter, 4pp. 4to., Pittsburg [Kansas], Dec. 11, 1859, discusses slavery and the issues of the day. In part: "…No brutal slaveholders have come to your notice save those who were punished. Now as regards the inflicting of punishment, I presume it is the same in your county as here…slavery…would retard the growth of the state…having been bred & born in a slave state men believe it to be a right…I hope I can honor such supporters of slavery. But if there is one man in this world whom I despise it is the low mean ranting northern doughface who says that slavery is wrong yet votes for its extension…It is so dishonorable…". Very good. Kansas had abolished slavery earlier the same year.
