Rudolf Hausner is considered one of the most important representatives of the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism; Silkscreens in colors by the artist fetch up to 1,200 euro at international auctions

The silkscreen in very intensive colors shows the typical leitmotif for the artist of ‘Adam’, a fictional character that the artist developed in his own likeness and used the first time in 1957. Integrated is Adam, consisting of a bust-like head with a torso-like body in the form of an open front pedestal, in a surrealistic spatial scene that gets a great visual conciseness by the strong colors and the precise manner of painting.

The silkscreen in colors is signed lower right in pencil ‘R. Hausner’ and numbered, titled and dated in pencil lower left ‘203/400 „Adam gut getroffen” 1975’. The sheet is overall somewhat wavy, presumably also due to the printing technique. It is hinged into a passepartout with adhesive fabric tape at two spots at the reverse upper edge. In the lower left margin is a faintly soiled spot. The image measures 44.4 x 57.6 cm, the sheet 68.8 x 84.7 cm

Rudolf Hausner (1914-1995)

The Austrian painter and graphic artist Rudolf Hausner belonged to the Vienna School and was a significant exponent of Fantastic Realism. He was trained at the Vienna arts academy under Carl Fahringer and Karl Sterrer. His first artistic phase was influenced both by Impressionism and Expressionism, before he established a surrealist group in the Austrian Art-Club in 1946. The artists Edgar Jene, Ernst Fuchs, Wolfgang Hutter, Fritz Janschka, Anton Lehmden and Arik Brauer were part of this group. In 1957 Hausner created his first ‘Adam picture’, which he henceforth developed and varied time and time again. His aim was to combine conscious and unconscious processes in one image. In 1959 the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism came into being through Hausner. The term Fantastischer Realismus was coined by the Austrian art critic Johann Muschik. (fea)
