The portfolio ‘Sinnieren über Schmutz’ was created in the context of the eponymous lecture that the German physician and psychoanalyst Alexander Mitscherlich (1908-1982) held in November 1974 in the Erker Gallery in St. Gallen. In addition to the text lithographed in Mitscherlich's handwriting it contains eight color lithographs on folded double sheets and a lithograph as a title page / cover by the Spanish artist. Together with a record with the audio recording of the lecture the leaves are contained in a grayboard wrapper in a half-cloth slipcase. The present copy is an artist's proof aside from the edition.

The portfolio is signed in the imprint lower center in pencil ‘tàpies’, and lower right with ballpoint ‘Mitscherlich’. It is dedicated upper center on the half-title page in pencil ‘A Josef Kovacs, souvenir de tàpies St. Gallen 17 Juin 1983’. Two lithographs (Galfetti 656 and 657) are lacking. The condition of the sheets is very good, the slipcase shows slight signs of wear. The images measure from 18.5 x 28 cm to 54 x 66 cm, the sheets 45 x 66 (double sheets with centerfold). The overall dimensions of the portfolio are 47.2 x 35 cm

Antoni Tapiès (1923-2012)

Antoni Tapiès is one of the main representatives of Spanish Art Informel. In the style of the ‘pintura matèrica’ movement, he mixed materials like sand, cement, marble dust and glue in his paintings, adding letters, symbols and crosses. He taught himself to draw and paint while still at school. Tapiès attended law school for three years, and then studied painting at the Acadèmia Valls in Barcelona. He was among the founders of the art group ‘Dau al Set’, a movement with links to the surrealist and Dadaist artists. His interest for philosophy led him to read existentialist literature. Tapiès’s works are represented in international museums and were shown at the Venice Biennale and documenta in Kassel. In 1884, Tapiès founded the Fundació Antoni Tàpies in Barcelona, where he lived and worked until his death in 2012. In 2010, he was honored with the title ‘Marqués’ by the Spanish king Juan Carlos I.
