Description
This stock was created after the merger of the American Express Co. and the Merchants Union Express Co., to create the American Merchants Union Express Co. in November of 1868. Stock no. 5289 issued to Paul B. Allen for 100 shares on August 4, 1869. Signed by William Fargo as President, Secretary J.N. Knapp and Treasurer E.P. Ross. Good for 180,000 shares in capital shares. There is one 25c revenue stamp that is improperly placed on the back on the stock. There is a red stamp mark on the front of the stock that reads "This Certificate not valid unless countersigned by the Farmers Loan and Trust Company-Transfer Agreement." The printer is identified as J.H. Duyckinck. Measures 12" x 9.60" Some wear including creases and tears on the top and some stains and fading. Cancelled. NY
