Civil War presentation sword, based on a model 1850 Staff and Field Officer's sword (1850-1872), having a single-edged steel blade with a false edge and two fullers, one side of the blade is decorated with etched designs which include an American eagle holding a ribbon with the motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and flanked by the letters 'U S,' accented with scrollwork, and griffins, the other side centers a motto 'THE CONSTITUTION AND THE LAWS' flanked by military trophies and griffins, as well as the name 'Wm Blym, Columbus Ohio,' who was most likely the recipient, the blade is marked 'W. Clauberg Solingen' and has the Clauberg standing knight logo, the figural carved ivory grip depicts a cannon, canon balls, and rammers, [the ivory grip indicates that the owner had been in battle, as the ivory symbolizes the metaphor of having 'seen the elephant' meaning that he had seen extraordinary things]; the pierced gilt bronze guard depicts the American eagle fighting the snake of secession flanked by the letters 'US; the gilt bronze pommel features the face of the Goddess of Liberty representing America; the scabbard is steel with applied gilt brass military trophies, sword 37"l; blade 31"l
