Description
KIPLING RUDYARD: (1865-1936) English Author, Nobel Prize winner for Literature, 1907. T.L.S., Rudyard Kipling, one page, 8vo, Bateman's, Burwash, Sussex, 28th May 1935, to William Dunlop, marked Private. Kipling informs his correspondent that 'the date on the bookplate merely gives the year when it was designed and has no reference to the volume itself. Nor does it, evidently, belong to any one that I know'. Together with a holograph copy of Dunlop's letter to Kipling, enquiring about a bookplate contained in an edition of The Voyage of the Polo Way by William Carlton Dawe, explaining that the bookplate is dated 1894 and that Dunlop's belief is that the bookplate is Kipling's and that an additional inscription in the book may be in Kipling's son's hand. Also including John Lockwood Kipling (1837-1911) English Art Teacher, Illustrator and Museum Curator, father of Rudyard Kipling. A.L.S., J. L. Kipling, one page, 8vo, Tisbury, 27th October 1905, to [H. A. Bench of Brighton]. Kipling announces that he has a dislike of publicity of any kind '& should much prefer not to appear in any way in your book, especially as I have no sort of connection with the county' although concludes 'I have however put down on your slip all that can be necessary to say'. With blank integral leaf bearing a pencil explanation in an unknown hand identifying the recipient of the letter and that the book was a County Family work. One very light paperclip rust stain to the upper left corner of Rudyard Kipling's letter and some light staining and minor age wear to the other two letters. G to VG, 3 €190-250
