Description
DUGDALE FREDERIC: (1877-1902) British Lieutenant, Victoria Cross winner for his actions in South Africa during the Second Boer War on 3rd March 1901. Rare A.L.S., Frederic, three pages, 8vo, Newcastle, South Africa, 1st June 1900, to his sister ('Dear Maudie'). Dugdale congratulates his sister on her diary system, 'It is very good and just the one that is wanted out here because you get all the news and don't miss any very important events', further adding that he has no news ('but I just send an envelope so that you may think you have got an interesting letter till you open it and find it's a stunner'), commenting on the winner of the Derby and the freezing weather in South Africa and also referring to a mutual acquaintance, Jim, 'He had just come back from the Transvaal (it sounds a long way but is only 8 miles, one rides into easily after lunch). He had been looting chickens….and seemed to have enjoyed the ride though there was a decided slump in Boers'. Dugdale concludes 'It is rather slow here as we have now been here sometime but I fancy we shall be moving directly now'. Accompanied by the original envelope hand addressed by Dugdale. Autographs of Dugdale are rare in any form following his untimely death at the age of 25 in a horse riding accident. EX €190-250
