Description
ROBERTS FREDERICK: (1832-1914) British Field Marshal, Victoria Cross winner for his actions at the Indian Mutiny on 2nd January 1858. A.L.S., Roberts, two pages, 8vo, Portland Place, London, 9th December 1902, to [Bernard] Holland, on the blind embossed stationery of the War Office. Roberts informs his correspondent that it has taken him a little time 'to correct the proof of my first days evidence' and further remarks 'I have made a good many alterations, but only in order to make the matter readable. The gyst of my replies remains as before.' With blank integral leaf. Accompanied by the original envelope hand addressed by Roberts and signed ('Roberts F.M.') by him in the lower left corner. Together with a selection of other A.Ls.S. etc., by a variety of politicians, diplomats etc., including Cecil Spring Rice (with interesting content regarding his experiences in Egypt, 1903), Thomas Sexton, George Curzon, Alfred Marshall (relating to Socialists and Trade Unions etc), Horace Plunkett, John Morley etc. Most of the letters are written to Bernard Holland and some are accompanied by the original envelopes.
