Description
GEORGE III: (1738-1820) King of the United Kingdom 1760-1820. A good D.S., George R, as King, at the head, one page, folio, Court at St.James's, 9th July 1762. The manuscript document is addressed to Henry Fox, Paymaster General of the Guards, Garrisons and Land Forces, and is a warrant ordering the payment of £2255.4.7 to the representatives of the late Sir James Colebrooke, Sir George Colebrooke, Arnold Nesbitt and Moses Franks for provisions made to seven transport ships bound for Martinique ('Martinico'). Countersigned at the foot by the Earl of Bute (1713-1792) British Prime Minister 1762-63 and Lord North (1732-1792) British Prime Minister 1770-82. A good document relating to the then British occupied Carribbean island of Martinique, enhanced by the countersignatures of two British Prime Ministers, including the rare signature of the Earl of Bute. Some light age wear to the edges and two small professional repairs, only very slightly affecting the text, but not the signatures. G. €375-500
At the time of this document Britain was engaged in the Seven Years War (1754-63) and occupied Martinique. Britain also controlled the island from 1794-1815, although was traded back to France at the end of the Napoleonic Wars.
