Description
ORLOV GRIGORY: (1734-1783) Russian Count, a lover of Catherine the Great who fathered two of her children. Rare ink signature, in Cyrillic, on an oblong 12mo piece of vellum, most likely clipped from an official document. Very slightly irregularly trimmed and with some very light foxing, G €125-190
Orlov led the coup which overthrew Catherine's husband Peter III of Russia, and installed Catherine as Empress. For some years, he was virtually co-ruler with her, but his repeated infidelities and the enmity of Catherine's other advisers led to his fall from power.
