ALEXANDER II: (1818-1881) Emperor of Russia 1855-81. Assassinated. D.S., Alexander, in Cyrillic, three pages, folio, Saint Petersburg, 16th February 1860, in Cyrillic. The largely manuscript document, with an attractive printed heading, is addressed to King Francis II of the Two Sicilies and states, in part, 'For the vacant position of Our Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary at the Court of Your Majesty We deign to appoint Our Actual State Councillor and Chamberlain Prince Alexander Volkonsky. Accrediting him to You with this Letter as Our Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary, We ask Your Majesty to admit him with favour and assure him Your faith in everything that he will have the honour to present You on Our behalf, especially in case of providing assurances in Our true friendship to Your Majesty'. Countersigned at the foot by Alexander Gorchakov (1798-1883) Russian Statesman & Diplomat, Chancellor of the Russian Empire 1863-83. Accompanied by the original envelope wrapper with a large blind embossed paper seal affixed. VG €1000-1500
