Description
A very unusual wood cane of a bearded man in a cap with a lizard. The carved wood handle is 3 1/3" high and 3" at its widest. It depicts a strange bearded man with a small round growth on his left cheek and a large rounded goiter protruding at his left neck. He is wearing a hat that features a two-headed lizard on its top. He is perhaps a character from literature or a folk tale. There is a 1 1/2" dull brass collar decorated with lines a large diamonds. The shaft is dark hardwood perhaps stained birch that ends with a 7/8" burnished brass ferrule. The overall length is 36" and the general condition is good with old rub damage to the tail of the lizard and to the tip of the man's nose. It is European, ca 1890 and it is a very interesting example that deserves further background investigation. Estimate: $900-$1300.
