Description
A very nice wood folk art elephant and crocodile cane. Hand fashioned from perhaps willow, it is carved with a 1" thick elephant for a handle. The elephant has short bone tusks and a 3" long, thin trunk pointing downward. At the base of the handle, a connected small ring of round blown-out silver balls provides a decorative collar. The shaft is fashioned as faux bamboo and about at its midpoint, a 7" crocodile is carved, raised on its legs. The crocodile has brown glass eyes, short sharp teeth, and there are traces of old red paint in its mouth. A 1" replaced brass ferrule completes the piece. The overall length is 35 1/2" and the condition is very good, with minor dents in the thin, silver metal collar. It was perhaps fashioned in England, ca 1900, and it is a fine example of imagination and amateur carving skill. Estimate: $800-$1200.
