Charles Coggshall was an early saddle maker in Miles City, Montana 1895. He was a partner of the famous saddle maker, Al Furstnow. Coggshall was a prosperous businessman who hired the best saddle makers available towork in his shop. His foreman was Clem Kathmann who was considered to be the finest saddle craftsman in the Northwest. Miles City was a terminal for the early cattle drives that came primarily from Texas for the freegrazing on Montana. Miles City became known as the Western saddle capitol of the United States. Coggshall was given credit for developing theflat plate rigging that is used on many of the Western saddles of today. This saddle was built around 1910 and still has the loop seat. The tree is the famousMiles City wide swell tree used by both Coggshall and Furstnow. The Coggshall saddle was incredibly popular and was used by cowboys across the entire country. The saddle shows good condition with a 13" seat.
