Description
An attractive Roman bronze lamp, 1st Century AD, with rounded body and flat top as well as a splayed and fluked nozzle with rounded tip. Prominent ‘volute spines’ are at the body end of the nozzle, meeting underneath with rosettes at their tops. The fill-hole is circular and stepped for a lid, the loop for the safety chain is on the side of the body. Double rod-handle at the rear, with leaf-shaped springs, curving upwards and forwards, joining and separating, and terminating in a handle-ornament in the form of an ivy leaf. Base-ring with internal lathe tuned mouldings. L: 7 ¼ in (18.4 cm); H: 3 ½ in (8.9 cm). An attractive example with some repair to the handle. Cf. Bailey, Vol. IV, no. Q3639 for a near identical example. Ex Los Angeles private collection.
