Description
A rare Post Classic Maya deity head from the Yucatan region of Mexico, ca. 1000 – 1500 AD. This large example is 4 in high and depicts Ek Chuah, the God of Merchants and Travelers, who is also associated with cacao and Moan, the owl. He is always portrayed with a long nose and protruding lower lip. He is adorned with large ear spools and is wearing a feline mask, with the face protruding from the fang-studded mouth. A rare find with strong calcification and root marks. Cf. Gallenkamp 'Maya – Treasures of an Ancient Civilization', page 221. Ex Foxworth estate.
