Description
SP A 8 x 10" black and white landscape photograph of Charles Lindbergh and other U.S. marines preparing to raise the flagpole on Mount Suribachi to signal that American soldiers had captured Japanese territory on the island of Iwo Jima on 23 February 1945. The photo is signed in black ink "Charles W. Lindberg. 1st Flag Raisen, Iwo Jima, Feb. 23, 1945, 10:30 A.M." and was taken by US Marine Corps photographer Lou Lowery. A drawn arrow below the text identifies Lindbergh as the soldier on the left. A typed caption pasted onto the verso reads: "The first flag was tied to the pole well below the mountain peak and then carried quickly to the top. As the flag was raised the enraged enemy began firing. Charles Lindgerg stomping the ground, John Bradley with back to the camera, Ernest Thomas, Henry Hansen, and Harold Schrier on the right". In excellent condition. The first flag raised was too small to be seen at nearby landing beaches and a larger flag was raised later, resulting in the iconic photograph taken by Joe Rosenthal. This photograph was then used as a model for the Marine Corps War Memorial monument in Arlington, U.S.A.
