SP A 14.7 x 10.5cm Elliott & Fry cabinet card portrait photograph of Lord Horatio Hubert Kitchener, British military leader and statesman (1850-1916). Boldly signed in black ink by Kitchener himself. Original photographer's mount. Overall size 16.6 x 10.6cm. Traces of glue on the rear. Some overall wear, with the upper left corner slightly bent and a short split on the lower part of left edge, but nevertheless an interesting photo uncommon in this format. Kitchener made his name at a young age when he successfully mapped the Holy Land for the British Palestine Exploration Fund. As commander of the British forces in the Boer War, Kitchener s reputation diminished after he was accused of issuing orders that led to the slaying of innocent civilians (the famous Breaker Morant incident). He was declared innocent and became India s commander-in-chief. As Secretary of War he led a successful recruitment campaign during World War I, which allowed his image to appear on what became an eponymous recruitment poster taken from J. M. Flagg s identical design that featured Uncle Sam.
